This project consists of a 32-bed addition and renovation to the existing psychiatric hospital. The addition includes two separate patient care wings connected by a third wing which can be monitored from either nurses’ station. The configuration accommodates changes in patient populations, providing flexibility to the hospital. A new corridor connecting the existing hospital and new patient wings allows hospital staff and visitors access to the new unit with minimal cross traffic. The addition’s exterior was designed to be a seamless transition between new and existing. The interior makes extensive use of color and daylighting to avoid the institutional feel that sometimes found in psychiatric facilities.
