With the swimming pool no longer in use at the Columbia State Community College Natatorium, the school decided to re-purpose the facility to become a new fitness center for faculty and students use with an emphasis on “Green” building systems. The updated water system utilized solar panels to provide hot water through the facility, and most interior materials contain recycled content and low or no volatile organic compounds. Project specifications also required the Contractor to use local materials as much as possible and to recycle at least 75% of all water generated during construction. The renovated facility has offered students and staff a welcomed place to better their physical condition in a space that was constructed to be earth friendly.
