PROVIDENCE HEALTH - FAIRFIELD COUNTY FREESTANDING EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT

Fairfield County and the small community of Winnsboro, South Carolina faced a difficult predicament. The hospital that had long been an anchor of the community was closing, and they needed to find a way for their citizens to access quality healthcare. Providence Health, based in Columbia, partnered with Fairfield County to continue to provide for this basic community need. The joint venture engaged HMK Architects to design a 12,000 square foot Emergency Department for the community to act as a replacement for the recently closed hospital. Providence Health and HMKA worked closely with Winnsboro and Fairfield County to ensure that the community would not be left without healthcare services and to incorporate donated and memorial elements into the design of the new facility. The freestanding Emergency Department includes 6 exam rooms and allows for expansion of 2 future exam rooms, as well as imaging services and a full lab. The project also consisted of a 6,000 square foot shell space for future development or for expansion of the Emergency Department.
