McMurray Middle School

In 1963, McMurray Middle School was a celebrated addition to its growing South Nashville community. However, after serving scores of students for over 50 years, the building was in dire need of modernization. Metro Nashville Public Schools selected HMK Architects to guide the renovation and additions to this neighborhood institution. Security, infrastructure, and technology needs were high priorities in order to bring this building into the 21st century. Teachers, administrators, and other school staff described the need for pull-out spaces and common areas to engage with students in smaller group settings, in particular due to the diverse international backgrounds of the school population. With this feedback, the design team worked to transform the existing facility and respectfully add new elements to the striking mid-century original design. Other highlights include a soaring new media center, new kitchen and serving areas, and protected outdoor spaces for education. These elements along with completely renovated classrooms and new building systems have once again make McMurray Middle School a beautiful and engaging learning environment for the children of Nashville.
